With its accession to the EU on January 1, 2007, Bulgaria joined the beneficiaries of the Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund in order for the country to increase its potential for growth in the economic sphere and to stimulate its development, which would bring it closer to the other Member States.
In the past programming period 2007-2013, Bulgaria has already used seven different operational programs, amounting to a total of 8.7 billion euros.
The next programming periods are 2014-2020 and 2020-2026. EUR 7.419 billion is foreseen for the current programming period 2014-2020, divided into the following operational programs:
Operational Program “Innovation and Competitiveness” with 1.2 billion euros
The main beneficiaries of the program are the companies from the manufacturing sector, as priority will be given to the enterprises working in priority economic sectors – pharmaceutical industry, chemical industry, computer production, optics and electronics, metal products, machines, information and communication technologies, healthcare, tourism, furniture. , textile and clothing industry. What is new is that new product sectors are expected, such as: publishing, music industry, media industry, film industry, design – industrial, furniture, fashion, graphic, multimedia, web design, etc. Special support will be given to companies working in the field of innovative technologies.
Operational Program “Human Resources Development” with 0.938 billion euros
Beneficiaries of the program can be companies operating in all sectors of the economy, as well as vocational training organizations.
Operational Program “Growing Regions” with 1,300 billion euros
The investments in this operational program will be realized everywhere in Bulgaria and will contribute to the socio-economic and territorial development of the underdeveloped regions of Bulgaria. The beneficiaries of the program are direct farmers; agri-food industry (agricultural processing industry); companies that carry out and develop non-agricultural activities in rural areas: production, agritourism, services, including services for social benefit.
Operational Program “Transport and Transport Infrastructure” with 1. 600 billion euros
Operational Program “Environment” with 1,500 billion euros
Operational Program “Science and Education for Smart Growth” with 0.596 billion euros
Operational Program “Good Governance” with 0.285 billion euros

Separately, 15.680 billion euros are earmarked for:
